Opening of Animal Magic at The Beaney.

 

The exhibition Animal Magic opened on April 11th  in the Front Room at The Beaney in Canterbury.

The exhibition is on till the 4th May,  The Beaney website here   There is a great café and eclectic collection in the museum there, as well as changing exhibitions.


 It was good to go over for the opening and meet up with some of the other artists showing work.

 

There is a good mix of mediums, including painting, drawing, photography, mosaic, textile and glass.
I was interested in  Jeanette Cook's Just Hatched, work in glass, as a medium that I haven't used and for the colours and forms. Jeanette's website here

  Kate Baker's Folksie Fox a mosaic piece, made me smile. I loved the use of floral patterned pieces of china in the body of the fox. Kate's facebook page here

Opening of Mr Lion Exhibition Turner Contemporary Gallery Margate.

 

Mr Lion opened at the Turner Contemporary Gallery last Tuesday.  It was good to see our group Blank Canvas's work on the gallery walls. Link to the exhibition here  Article in the Thanet Gazette here

 

We had been planning the show for a few weeks and my painting Call of the Wild rather than my artists book, was my choice in the end for the show.

 

We had the Lion bars, Battenberg cake, biscuits tea and coffee ready and some art tables for people to experiment with  making something.

There was an opening speech and Blank Canvas was praised for our work in the exhibition, for supporting Turner Contemporary and for being part of their vision for the gallery.

We had a lot of visitors and I think most people were interested and intrigued by the idea of Mr Lion.

The show is on till 22nd March 2015 Tuesday till Sundays 10 till 6pm

Out of the Blue exhibition at the Pie Factory Margate

 

I went down to The Pie Factory on Sunday to see Out of the Blue, an exhibition by Sally Higgs and Deborah Crofts.

The Pie Factory is a really good space, website here in the old town close to the sea and the Turner Contemporary Gallery.

Sally and Deborah have used the space well, filling the rooms with colour. They were both at the gallery when I went along so it was good to talk to them.

Both artists have a love of the sky, clouds and sea, the fleeting moments and changes in light that we have in Britain.  They also both have studios in Folkestone's creative quarter and I was pleased to hear that the area is developing well.

Deborah was showing a range of work including pieces with bold shapes and colour that seem to take a moment and distill it into an essence.

Sally's work includes colourful sunsets and sunrises that seem to contain the light and release it. Some more of Sally's work here

I really enjoyed looking at the work and meeting other artists who are interested in the same subject matters as I am.

The exhibition is on till 26th March 10-4pm and there is an opportunity to make a postcard picture yourself to add to the wall during the exhibition.

Art Grows on Trees E17 Art Trail.

On Saturday, I joined with a group of artist friends on our annual art give away as part of the E17 Art trail. Artists included Katja who had brought some fun cacti work, Dean who hung some of his famous fruit with a twist and Rachel who brought some of her pin hole photographs. Julie had hung some little watercolours and Valeria had some cards to pick.

We have been running Art Grows on Trees for a few years now, putting art work on the trees next to Walthamstow bus station for passers by to pick and take home. This year I put a few paintings and larger pieces of work as I'm sorting my things before moving.

It was great to hear the enthusiasm for my work and peoples real surprise and pleasure at having a free work of art.

We will be putting more work on the trees this Saturday 15th September from around 10am. You have to come early though to pick your choice.

100sqft opening, Dalston

The 100sqft exhibition opened on Sunday at the Cholmeley Boys Club in Dalston. I hadn't been there before and enjoyed the quirky space, filled with various degrees of faded and well worn furniture and objects.
That little corner of Dalston looks like it's getting some more creative re development, though the main street is much the same. The new rail station does look a bit like a maximum security building however.
The 100 works of art on display looked great displayed at the end of the room. I like the philosophy of Carne's vision and of the quite random mix of work you get because of it. They had produced a catalogue/book too which was a good idea. The next exhibition is in New Orleans.
